a drama with no drama

No cancers and amnesias. No two rich guys who will fall in love with a poor girl. No two people living together in one roof until they fall in love. No constant bickerings of an unlikely couple from start to end. No love squares (or triangles). Nope, this doesn't have the million Korean drama cliches you'll ever think of. Story of a Man (english title: The Slingshot) is just about an average man, plotting ways on how to revenge this quiet and mysterious son of a rich business man who adores (not really the word, but I'm trying to prevent spoilers) his sister.

L-R(characters): Ahn Kyung Tae, Kim Shin, Park Mun Ho, Do Jae Myung

Simply because of his brother's death, he plots ways on how to destroy the most influential business man and at the same time, encountering different kinds of people who would help him get his revenge. A typical revenge story, you say? Not if you try to watch it.

Park Yong Ha as Kim Shin

Now, what makes a drama really good? For me(like most of you), it includes four things: direction, music, actors, and plot. And boy, does this drama has all of these. For one, the music will certainly not fail you, because it plays (and doesn't play) at the right moments. The actors deserve all the praises and awards that they will receive because they all did a fantastic job in each of their roles. Very compelling, and it makes you think that they own that character.

Park Ki Woong as Ahn Kyung Tae, Kim Kang Woo as Chae Do Woo, and Han Yeo Woon as Chae Eun Soo

Like I keep saying again and again, this is not your typical drama because its dark, thrilling and exciting with a complicated and rich plot and enough to put you at the edge of your seat on every episode.

But if you still want to know and you're too lazy to google, here's a more detailed description of this series taken from KBS Global english site:

Who will be the final victor?

Money begets tragedy

Kim Sin borrows money from loan sharks, putting himself up as collateral. He needs the money to protect his family after his brother killed himself in response to being framed as having served contaminated dumplings. To break away from the grip of the loan sharks, Kim heads to the local broadcasting company to seek out the reporter who wrongly accused his brother. He ends up in an attempted murder case and goes to jail. His family is forced to sever all contact with him and flees to the countryside. It also means farewell to Gyeong-ah, the woman whom he loves.

Zeroes in on making money

In jail, Kim finds out that a man named Chae Do-woo of the Chaedong Group is deeply involved in the dumpling scandal. Encountering inmates from all walks of life, Kim transforms into a financially savvy man. He learns how to make money and how to live a money-centered life. Meanwhile Gyeong-ah, who has become involved in disreputable business in order to help Kim, also meets Chae Do-woo.

Money and revenge

Through fellow prisoner An Gyeong-tae, Kim befriends Park Moon-ho from the music cafe "Muse." Along with another figure, Do Jae-myeong, Kim creates a foursome "dream team" whose aim is to crush Chae in the dog-eat-dog financial world. Their total savings add up to a paltry 100 million won. That's all they've got, and with this 100 million, they will have to stand up against the 400 billion won valued construction group Chaedong and Chae Do-woo. The war begins!

Look at some of the pictures below to see a few shots of how this drama is very well-executed:

(This show has a lot of interesting shots, that is somewhat connected to the plot I just can't put everything so as to avoid spoilers. Most of the screencaps were taken from dramabeans (but I didn't hotlink, I promise), who made recaps of this drama.)

So just how different this drama is anyway? Would the main character have his revenge in the end? Would goodness prevail over evil? Well, that's up to you to find out. Oh, by the way, this drama is not for everyone. If you're into romantic-comedy, melodramas, or eyecandies, skip this and find a new one. Or, you can try the first two episodes, and see if it might interest you. Just a reminder, the awesomeness of this show is packed into 20 episodes. And I assure you, this drama will be one hell of a ride.

Note: If you have a soompi account, you can visit the thread and read some of the discussions but a word of warning: in order to fully enjoy this thriller drama, you should prevent yourself from reading some spoilers. And you can also download this in aja-aja and subs are provided by WITHS2.
